Iguassu Falls History

The Iguazu Falls were discovered by the Spanish discover Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, a member of the group called "Los adelante" in 1541, when he was named governor of Paraguay and decided to go down the river looking for a route to Asuncion.


Cabeza de Vaca he gave the name "Saltos de Santa Maria", thus paying homage to the Virgin who was Protector of his expedition.


However, that region was already known by the Indians and soon resumed his original name Guarani Guaçu Y "which means" big water
